Socialist Action Campaigns

Introduction: As a small organization we spend a lot of time educating ourselves about revolutionary theory, and reaching out to others with our ideas.  But we don’t feel that it is enough to simply talk politics and have the correct political program, you have to try to test your ideas in the real world by getting involved in real day to day struggles.  That is why our members put so much time and effort into building and leading the various social movements that challenge injustice and oppression.

Below is a list of just some of the issues, coalitions and projects that Socialist Action and Youth for Socialist Action are involved in – and that we urge our readers and supporters to support.

Bring the Troops Home Now:

We are opposed to any and all U.S. foreign military invasions.  Currently one of our main campaigns is against the continued U.S. occupation of Iraq.  We strive to build a broad, democratic anti-war movement armed with the strategy of mass actions around the call of “Out Now!”  We are active in local anti-war coalitions across the country, from Connecticut United for Peace, to the Northland Anti-War Coalition in Duluth, MN.  Nationally, we are striving to unite a mass action wing of the movement in the National Assembly to End the Iraq & Afghanistan Wars & Occupation.

We also call for the withdrawal of all U.S. troops from Afghanistan, Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, Haiti, the Balkans, South Korea, Okinawa, and everywhere else!  For up today anti-war news and analysis from Socialist Action check out our anti-war page.

We are also opposed to any and all attacks on our civil liberties.  We have successfully won the right not to have to turn over lists of our supporters and contributors for our candidates in elections due to the government’s history of harassment against socialists, we are active in local efforts to resist the Patriot Act, and are currently playing an active role in the fight to save progressive attorney Lynne Stewart.  We support the efforts of, urge people to support the Lynne Stewart Defense Committee.

Standing Up for Immigrant Rights:

Socialist Action calls for a world without borders, with equal rights for all.  We stand in solidarity with the growing immigrant rights movements, and demand the immediate legalization of all undocumented workers!

We urge everyone to get involved in the Grassroots Immigrant Justice Network.  For news and analysis of the immigrant rights movement, check out our Immigrant Rights page.

Defend Abortion Rights:

Throughout our history we have been very active in abortion clinic defense and the fight against reactionary groups like Operation Rescue.  We fight for the women’s movement to break from reliance on the Democratic Party, and return to a strategy of independent mass action.  We urge women and men to stand up for equal rights for all!

For news and analysis on the women’s movement and the fight for abortion rights check out our women’s liberation page.

End the Racist Death Penalty:

We are opposed to the death penalty in the U.S. as a racist and class biased tool of oppression.  We are active in several campaigns, such as the fight to free Mumia Abu-Jamal and Kevin Cooper.

To get involved in the fight to free Mumia, we urge people to get involved with the Mobilization to Free Mumia Abu-Jamal.  For information about the fight against the death penalty, and against racism in general, check out black liberation page.

Defend and Expand Affirmative Action:

Affirmative action is a much needed attempt to remedy the continuing scourge of racism in this country.  We defend affirmative action policies, and believe that for affirmative action to have any teeth, there needs to be quotas.  The struggle against racism and sexism is in the class interests of all workers, regardless of race or gender.

For information about the fight for affirmative action, and against racism and sexism in general, check out black liberation and women’s liberation pages.

For the Right to Same-Sex Marriage:

We view the right-wing attack on gay marriage as blatant bigotry, and have been active in the fight for gay marriage from San Francisco to Superior, WI.  We’ve initiated protests, and are currently doing what we can to stop the wave of amendments to state constitutions banning gay marriage. We’ve also been active in attempts to revive the liberation aspect of the gay liberation movement, and support the work of groups like the Gay Liberation Network.

For more news and views about the struggle for GLBT rights, check out our queer liberation page.

Labor Solidarity:

We believe in the need for labor to break from the Democratic Party, to organize the unorganized, and to mobilize the combined power of the working class to effectively fight the bosses.  Our comrades are active in unions ranging from UNITE-HERE in Duluth to the Transit Workers in NYC.  We do all we can to mobilize support for strikes, and to encourage moves towards establishing a genuine Labor Party based on the unions.

To stay abreast of developments in the labor movement be sure to check out our labor page and the KC Labor website.

For Free, Quality Education:

We believe education should be free from preschool to graduate school!  If the small island nation of Cuba can do it, so can the United States!  We are opposed to any and all tuition hikes, student fees, and any other attempts to put the cost of education of working people and students.  Tax the rich to fund education.  We are also for student/teacher/community control of the schools, and opposed the presence of military recruiters and corporations in our schools.

For news and info about student activism check out the Youth for Socialist Action website.  We also urge you check out the Labor Party’s free higher education campaign.

Solidarity With Palestine:

Socialist Action calls for a free, democratic and secular Palestine where Arabs and Jews can live together as equals.  We are active in the fight against Israeli aggression and Zionism in general, and in defense of the Palestinian Intifada.  We have also sent comrades to Palestine as part of International Solidarity Movement teams to project Palestinian homes from Israeli bulldozers.

For news and analysis of the Palestinian struggle, check out our Palestine page.

Hands Off Cuba & Venezuela:

We have long been in the front lines in the fight to defend the Cuban Revolution from U.S. aggression.  For example, SA comrades initiated the largest U.S.-Cuba solidarity conference that has been held to date in this country, in Berkeley in 1998.  We’ve also organized YSA delegations to Cuba, and continue to be active in the fight to prevent U.S. intervention in Cuba and Venezuela.  We are a proud member of the National Network on Cuba.

For news, analysis and Cuba and Venezuela resources, check out our Latin American page.

Defend the Family Farm:

We stand in solidarity with the working farmers striving to survive against the onslaught of big agribusiness and factory farms.  We call for a cessation of all land foreclosures and guaranteed minimum crop and livestock prices in excess of the cost of production.

Currently, Socialist Action comrades in the upper-Midwest are active in the fight by local farmers and others to stop the massive proposed Arrowhead-Weston electrical bulk transmission line which would seize farmers land, and pose a serious health risk to all in its path.  The coalition that has come together to fight this transmission line is Save Our Unique Lands.  You can also find out info about this, and other farm struggles, on our farmers page.
