Defending the Cuban Revolution

Just 90 miles off the coast of the U.S., Cuba has survived decades of U.S. blockade and other disruptions while pursuing its unique socialist revolution.  We unconditionally defend the Cuban revolution, and salute the brave efforts of the Cuban people in their resistance against U.S. imperialism.  While we have our criticisms of Cuba, we offer them as comrades, and believe Cuba to be a non-Stalinist, revolutionary country that is deserving of the support of revolutionaries and progressives everywhere.

We’ve set up this page to post materials on this very important country.  We welcome your feedback on the materials posted here. Be sure to also check out our Latin America page!

Cuba News & Views

Celia Hart: Permanent Revolution in Latin America:  To celebrate the new rise of revolutionary movements in Latin America, Celia Hart—a leading Cuban journalist and intellectual and the daughter of two of the most celebrated leaders of the Cuban Revolution, Armando Hart and Haydee Santamaria — began a series of lectures in Mexico City on June 29.  continued

Belated Decision on the Cuban 5:  In August, the 11th Circuit Federal Appeals Court in Atlanta overturned the conviction and sentences of five Cubans who were condemned to crushing prison terms for informing the American and Cuban government of plots to commit terrorist acts in Cuba.  continued

Posada Carrites Affair Unmasks U.S. Hypocrisy:  President Bush’s famous Aug. 26, 2003, statement, “if you harbor a terrorist … you’re just as guilty as the terrorists,” now has a hypocritical ring to it in light of Washington’s handling of the Luis Posada Carriles case.  continued

Castro Refutes Bush’s Charges:  It is hard to imagine what limits there are to the aggressiveness and hypocrisy of the U.S. rulers when they face a threat to their domination of their “backyard.” There is a long history of open and covert U.S. intervention in Latin America to defend the interests of U.S. big business there, including collusion with dictatorships that murdered tens of thousands of people in the 1970s and 1980s. continued

Why Black Cubans Support the Revolution:  Despite all the propaganda about how hard life is in Cuba, an article in the Aug. 21 Los Angeles Times revealed that there was certainly one section of the population that unconditionally stands by the revolution – Cuba’s Black population. And nearly 60 percent of the population in Cuba today is either Black or Mulatto.

“Everything I have, I owe to the revolution,” Andres Castillo told L.A. Times correspondent Ingrid Peritz. “Blacks, especially of my generation, know we were made by the revolution. So we’re willing to put up with hardships now.”
continued

Defend the Cuban 5:  Renown civil rights and human rights attorney Leonard Weinglass toured the San Francisco Bay Area on the weekend of May 22-23 to mobilize support for the Cuban Five. Weinglass was at the center of several historic legal defense cases, from the Pentagon Papers trial to the trial of the Chicago Seven. For a decade he was chief counsel to Mumia Abu-Jamal. continued
