Introduction: We
stand in solidarity with the Irish liberation struggle and its fight for a
united Ireland. We
are opposed to any and all compromises with British imperialism.
We’ve set up this page to provide readers with an introduction to our
views on the Irish struggle, as well as news and historical material on this
very important international issue. We also feature news and views from Socialist Democracy, which is our
sister group in Ireland. We
invite your feedback on the materials posted on this page.
Irish
Liberation News & Views:
“Power-Sharing” Regime Installed in Northern Ireland: The recent inauguration of the
new “power-sharing” government in Northern Ireland was the occasion for a feast
of self-satisfaction by capitalist politicians who claim that all
conflicts can be resolved by negotiations, as long as everything remains
the same. continued
The Recent Elections in Ireland: The Irish election of 24th
May astounded all the political observers commenting on it. The election
was called unexpectedly at a rushed early morning press conference in a
transparent attempt to head of a judicial enquiry into suspect financial
dealings by the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern. The
enquiry was immediately postponed. On the campaign trail Ahern was
struck dumb when questioned about his finances. When he did make a
statement a poll showed that over half the electorate did not believe
him. In the background behind the corruption allegations was a major
strike by nurses, a crisis in the health service, the repression of
women’s reproductive rights, major incidents of pollution and a mass privatisation campaign. continued
Derry Republican
Regroupment in the Cards?: A meeting to discuss a
united republican regroupment was held in Derry on
May 12th. The meeting had grown out of discussions between the IRSP
and other republican groups as well as the activity of a Prisoners group
and a Concerned republican group opposing the RUC/PSNI. In the
recent past activities have included a mass petition by former republican
prisoners opposing Sinn Fein’s decision to support the RUC/PSNI and an
electoral campaign in support of Peggy O’Hara, mother of hunger striker
Patsy O’Hara. The campaign gained almost 2000 votes. As one
militant put it, it hadn’t secured a seat, but it had secured a base for
republicanism. continued
British advance the cause of
sectarianism again: The decision of the British
government to give over £30 million to disadvantaged Protestant areas not
specifically because they are poor but because they are Protestant is a
significant intensification of sectarianism in the North. The terminally
naïve, who harbour some belief that the best of
intentions lies behind the British government’s distribution of money to
the poor, should ponder this decision carefully and consider what it
tells us about the nature of the new dispensation in the North of
Ireland. continued
Loyalist killers on state payroll: It
has been reported that the UDA killer Torrens Knight, jailed for his part
in the gun attacks in Greysteel and Castlerock in 1993 which resulted in 12 deaths, was a
paid agent of the British at the time he carried out the massacres. Not
only was he working for British intelligence before his conviction, but
he was apparently taken back onto the payroll after his early release
under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement, with a sustainer said to be
as much as £50,000 per year. While Special Branch sources have gone out
of their way to deny the claims – which, after all, is what they would
say – this story shines a spotlight on the murky world of the British
covert forces and their network of agents. continued
