Students In Action!

Introduction: Welcome to the student page of the Lake Superior Socialist Action website.  Our youth/student affiliate is Youth for Socialist Action.  We are active on a number of high schools and college campuses across northern Wisconsin and Minnesota.

We work with a wide variety of activist groups, and try to connect student activists from various campuses with each other, and with off campus activists.  Contact us if you’re interested in joining YSA, starting up a YSA chapter at your school, or working with us.  Students are often the spark plugs of social movements – so lets get together and organize!

This Month’s Feature:

* Midwest Social Forum:  The Midwest Social Forum is an annual gathering of grassroots organizations, community activists, workers, educators, students, and others committed to making a better, more just world possible. It provides an open space for exchanging experiences and information, strengthening alliances and networks, and developing effective strategies for progressive social, economic, and political change.  It’ll be taking place this year in Milwaukee from July 6-9.  Keep an eye out for the SA/YSA literature table!

Student News & Views:

* YSAer Elected to Douglas County Board:  This past April, Adam Ritscher, a member of Socialist Action and YSA, was elected to a 2-year term to serve as the District 6 representative on the Douglas County Board of Supervisors.  Ritscher, who ran openly as a Marxist, is Socialist Action’s first elected public official.  Congratulations to Adam!

* Poor & Immigrant Youth Riot in France:  In spite of the emergency powers that came into force at midnight on 9 November, the movement of revolt that is sweeping the poor neighborhoods and estates on the edges of France’s major cities is continuing.  continued

* Vigil Held for David Croud & Against Police Brutality:  On October 13 a 29-year old American Indian man by the name of David Michael Croud was beaten and arrested by the Duluth police for alleged public drunkenness. After police took Mr. Croud into custody he was taken to SMDC hospital, where he was sedated, went into a coma, and died six days later. continued . . .

* Report on World Youth Festival:  The 16th World Festival of Youth and Students was held Aug. 8-15 here in the Venezuelan capital. The festival proved to be an excellent opportunity for progressive and socialist youth from all over the world to gather in a country that is currently a focus of deep political interest worldwide.  continued

* YSA Student Activist Visits Cuba:  Over this past winter break, I had the extraordinary opportunity to visit Cuba. I went as part of a twenty-member delegation through the organization Witness for Peace. Our group was composed of a diverse mix of college students and older adults from various backgrounds, from cosmopolitan New Yorkers to activists from Indian Country.  continued

* Students Protest Tuition Hikes in Wisconsin:  College tuition hikes are sweeping the nation like a feverish disease. In the face of massive budget shortfalls, state after state is making the decision to try and balance their budgets on the backs of working class students.  continued
