Free Mumia Abu-Jamal!

Mumia Abu-Jamal is a Black political prisoner who has been imprisoned for over two decades for a crime he did not commit.  Accused of killing a Philadelphia police officer, Mumia’s only real “crime” was being a revolutionary and an articulate voice against racism and police brutality.

We have played an important role in initiating broad based coalitions to campaign on his behalf, and continue to play a leading role in his defense. We believe that Mumia has been framed by the state due to his political activities and views, and that his case highlights the racism and injustice prevalent in the American so called justice system. We urge all of our readers and supporters to join us in this very important fight!

Mumia Abu-Jamal : On the Road to Freedom?  It is difficult to imagine that the systematic race and class bias that permeate America's criminal "justice" system could be set aside and that the nation's most famed and innocent death row inmate and political prisoner of 25 years, Mumia Abu-Jamal, could win a new trial and freedom.  continued

One Legal Decision Away From Execution or a New Trial:  Mumia Abu-Jamal, the world’s most well-known political prisoner, has been on Pennsylvania’s death row for 25 years. An award-winning journalist and advocate for the rights of the oppressed everywhere, his fight for a new trial and freedom has won the support of millions across the globe. continued

Major Court Victory for Mumia Abu-Jamal:  In a decision that will likely stun the Pennsylvania legal establishment that has been trying to railroad death-row political prisoner and journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal to the execution chambers for 24 years, the U.S. Court of Appeals of the Third Circuit, reversed two critical Federal District Court rulings.  continued

Michael Moore Apologizes for Mumia Remark:  Author/director Michael Moore stopped at Philadelphia’s Temple University in late October to address a crowd of several thousand students while on tour, stumping for “lesser-evil,” pro-war John Kerry. Moore opened by inviting to the stage and paying homage to the mother of the first National Guardsman killed in a U.S. war since 1945. The overwhelmingly antiwar crowd responded with applause as the honoree graciously and proudly signaled her appreciation. She was followed by a Marine who had recently returned from Iraq. The disillusioned soldier reported on the horrors perpetuated by the U.S. military on the Iraqi people. He too was enthusiastically welcomed. continued

National Mumia Task Force Formed:  Twenty-five prominent leaders of a broad range of human and civil rights organizations and other progressive groups met in New York City on Oct. 2 to establish the National Task Force to Free Mumia Abu-Jamal. Jamal, the victim of a racist Philadelphia police/prosecution frame-up trial in 1982, has been on Pennsylvania’s death row for 22 years.  continued

The NAACP Calls for a New Trial for Mumia:  The NAACP national convention, meeting in Philadelphia last month, devoted a large part of its sessions to hoopla in support of the Democrats and presidential candidate John Kerry.  At the same time, however, the convention succeeded in passing an important resolution that reaffirmed the organization’s opposition to the death penalty and—for the first time in its history—called for a new trial for journalist and innocent death-row prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal. The resolution was approved on July 15 with only one dissenting vote.  continued
