Activists Mobilize to Defend Mumia
The case of the world's most well-known death row political prisoner
and innocent man, Mumia Abu-Jamal, was an integral part of the mass antiwar
mobilizations on April 20 in Washington, D.C., and San Francisco.
Taped messages from Mumia opposing U.S. moves in the Middle East were
played at both demonstrations.
Speakers for Mumia's defense addressed the massive crowds, while banners
and placards brought his freedom struggle to the attention of new layers
of social activists.
In Berkeley, Calif., the evening of April 20 saw 900 supporters attend
a fundraising rally for Mumia's defense, initiated by the Mobilization to
Free Mumia Abu-Jamal. Howard Zinn and Alice Walker addressed a standing-room-only
crowd that raised $20,000 for Mumia's freedom struggle and for the Middle
East Children's Alliance and Friends of Free Speech Radio.
On the weekend of April 6, Mumia supporters mobilized in Philadelphia
at a rally of 800 launched by the International Concerned Family and Friends
of Mumia Abu-Jamal.
The May 11 mass demonstration in San Francisco, organized by the Mobilization
to Free Mumia, is expected to draw additional thousands.
