Students Shout “Shame on You!” to the American Transmission Company

Around 4:30pm on Thursday, Oct. 28, a crowd gathered.  It was a crowd of great numbers, over thirty at times, consisting of men and women, young and old.

It stood strongly on the corner of Lake Ave. and Superior Street in Duluth, MN for all to see.  It was a rally!  It was there to show opposition to the Arrowhead-Weston Transmission Line and all greedy utilities.

There were “NO LINE!” sings everywhere, along with similar messages like, “The Fight’s NOT Over!” and “People Before Profits!”  It also turned around to direct the words, “Shame on You!” at the giant Minnesota Power building towering above the plaza.

Several students organized and hosted the rally because we are the future generation.  If this thing is ever completely built, we will be forced to face the many financial, health and environmental consequences that it possesses.  We ALL have to be concerned!

The rally was sponsored by the Activist Roundtable, Lake Superior Greens, Hindsight, Socialist Action, the Queer & Allied Student Union, Greenfire and several other groups at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.  Although it was put on by students, SOUL (Save Our Unique Land) eagerly participated.

During the hour, we heard from various speakers representing the students, landowners, our community and other activist groups.  It was a great opportunity to raise our voices!  We provided literature for further education on the issue and even got coverage on all three local news stations!  We need to continue to spread the truth to those around us.  This is FAR from over – keep the fight alive!  Thanks again for all that attended the rally that night, the turnout was powerful (no pun intended)!

The above report is by Beth Aker.
